Berks VNA provides wellness clinics for low-income, elderly and disabled adults living in the Reading Housing Authority’s public housing developments.
Our goals are to address residents’ social and physical needs by:
- Helping residents manage their diet
- Improve or maintain wellness through exercise
- Educate residents about and provide support during smoking cessation
- Preventing further disease or health complications through education and routine health screenings
At these clinics you will see our caring nurses helping with medication compliance, checking blood pressures, assisting with post-hospital instruction, and coordinating medical and social services as needed. When funding is available, we will provide flu vaccinations as well. Our nurses care for more than 500 residents annually.
Another important part of this program are the group meetings that take place once a month. Topics have included information on osteoporosis, low sodium and cholesterol diets, mood disorders, cancers, diabetes, and smoking cessation. Presenters have been from the Penn State University Agricultural Center, Reading Area Community College, Alvernia University, and the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
